The Ford Mustang debuted in 1964 to a lot of fanfare. Drivers were so enthusiastic about the brand-new coupe that Ford sold over 600,000 units in the first year alone. Now, the Mustang is still the best-selling sports car on the market with global sales totaling 113,066. Part of what makes the Mustang continuously relevant during its nearly-55-year reign is the sheer amount of packages, trims, and options Ford offers alongside its star sports car.

The base model of the Ford Mustang offers a turbocharged 310-horsepower four-cylinder engine, but if you're looking for more power, you can upgrade to any number of available engines in the lineup. This includes the new High-Performance Package, introduced at the recent New York International Auto Show. It upgrades the base powertrain to include a new EcoBoost engine that churns out 330 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, allowing the new Ford Mustang to go from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 4.5 seconds.

The High-Performance Package also offers cosmetic touches, such as larger brakes and a rear spoiler - features typically only available on more expensive models. The new Ford Mustang is also 200 lb. lighter than outgoing models, offering better handling and aerodynamics thanks to its lightweight build. Ford representatives predict models equipped with the High-Performance Package will offer the same fuel economy as the base model, though this has not been confirmed by the EPA.

Other recent packages and models introduced to the Ford Mustang's range include the Mustang Bullitt, a tribute to the film "Bullit," and the Shelby GT500. Ford Mustang models equipped with the High-Performance Package engine - only produced at one location in Valencia, Spain and in special batches - will be rolling out to market later this year.
