Winter looms close, and while you're in the midst of prepping your vehicle for the colder months by performing fall maintenance checks, you might be wondering if it would be worth it to fit your ride with winter tires. Vehicles straight from the factory typically come with "all-season tires," which are versatile without compromising smooth performance or high fuel mileage. If you have tires suited to all seasons, should you really swap them out for winter tires? It depends.
The problem with all-season tires is that, while they try to include the capabilities of winter tires without losing out on the performance aspect of the ride, they end up compromising the full capability of winter tires. As a result, all-season tires are more prone to succumbing to all the hazards of driving in harsh winter weather, with less tread and grip to prevent you from sliding off slippery, icy roads.
When making the decision of whether or not you should opt for winter tires, you should consider the capabilities of your vehicle and the climate of the area you live in. More mild regions with less snow and ice will treat vehicles with all-season tires kindly, but if you live in an area that gets a lot of snowfall, winter tires will be your best - and safest - bet. Additionally, consider whether you have all-wheel drive on your vehicle, which allows your vehicle to be more capable and have more traction on slippery terrain.
Ultimately, it's better to be safe than sorry. Fitting your vehicle with winter tires allows you to drive with added peace of mind on hazardous winter roads. You won't have to worry about sliding through stop signs or fishtailing off the road. Plus, it's safer for other drivers around you, too, who won't have to worry about avoiding you in case of an accident. Consider getting winter tires on your vehicle today!
